Hospitality
Keys, not SKUs. Eight groups file here, the smallest room in the register and the narrowest in time — every one of them founded between 1928 and 1995, a sixty-seven-year window, because the modern luxury hotel is a twentieth-century invention in a way that a bag or a watch is not.
Mandarin Oriental was named the world's best luxury hotel brand by Luxury Travel Intelligence in 2025, at 81.8%, for a third consecutive year — and the publisher, the table and the year are all on its page, because "best in 2025 surveys" with nobody's name attached is exactly the kind of sentence this register stopped printing.
Aman is scarcity applied to a pavilion. Founded in 1988 with Amanpuri in Phuket, headquartered in Switzerland today, and filed in this register to Thailand, because that is where the first one was built and because an origin field that holds two countries is a field that cannot be filed on. Belmond is trains and civic monuments inside LVMH — the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a hotel that happens to move. Four Seasons is an operating system exported from Toronto: the house that proved a service standard can be franchised without being diluted, which is the hardest trick in the room.
Rosewood and Peninsula both file to Hong Kong SAR, and Peninsula, founded in 1928, is the oldest house here. Six Senses, founded 1995, is the youngest, and the only one whose original proposition was environmental rather than ceremonial.
A hotel is the only maison in this book you can be inside. That is its whole advantage and its whole exposure: every other house is judged on an object, and this one is judged on a morning.
The room, counted
Hospitality holds eight of the hundred places, the seventh-largest room in the register. Its houses run from No. 84 Four Seasons to No. 91 Six Senses. Founding years run 1928 to 1995, a span of 67 years, with a median of 1977: Peninsula is the oldest filed here and Six Senses the youngest. The room draws on five countries — Hong Kong SAR 3, Thailand 2, Canada 1, the United Kingdom 1, the United States 1. No parent in this room holds more than one of its houses. One of the eight carry an attributed figure on their page; the rest carry a reading and no number, which is the register's rule rather than an omission.
