Beauty & Fragrance

The dressing table is a maison, and it is the one most rankings under-count, because a €90 object does not look like a luxury object until you notice how many of them a house sells. Ten file here, and their founding years run 1760 to 2006 — a wider span than any room but spirits.

Guerlain is industrial France with a nineteenth-century face: Brand Finance placed it tenth in the Luxury & Premium 50 2025, the highest-placed beauty house on that table. Lancôme is the same idea at mass scale. Dior and Chanel both run beauty divisions that would be substantial houses on their own — Chanel led Brand Finance 2026 Cosmetics 50 as well as its apparel table — but neither is filed here, because this register files a house by the object it would still be if you stripped the logo off, and Chanel without its beauty counter is still Chanel.

La Mer is American mythology sold by the jar. Clé de Peau Beauté is Japanese light. Byredo is proof that a twenty-first-century house can enter this category without a trunk, a founder's portrait or a heritage claim, on nothing but a point of view about smell.

Creed is the room's oldest entry and its most careful one. The house dates itself to 1760 in London; historians have not substantiated that, and this register prints the year with the house's name attached to it — by the house's own account, not independently documented — rather than either repeating it as fact or quietly dropping it. In March 2026 the house changed hands again, to L'Oréal, when the Kering Beauté acquisition completed.

Fragrance is the only luxury object that leaves the room before you do. Everything in this atelier follows from that.

The room, counted

Beauty & Fragrance holds ten of the hundred places, the fifth-largest room in the register. Its houses run from No. 74 Guerlain to No. 83 Jo Malone London. Founding years run 1760 to 2006, a span of 246 years, with a median of 1970: Creed is the oldest filed here and Tom Ford Beauty the youngest. The room draws on five countries — France 5, the United States 2, Japan 1, Sweden 1, the United Kingdom 1. Its parents overlap: Estée Lauder holds three, L’Oréal holds two of the houses in this room. One of the ten carry an attributed figure on their page; the rest carry a reading and no number, which is the register's rule rather than an omission.
